Meet The Caterpillars!

Last week, Mom got some caterpillars in her classroom and I got to meet them just the other night! Mom tells me they will soon turn into Painted Lady butterflies. I didn't care too much for them but I did think their food smelled really good. They have this processed food made from the mallow plant plus real mallow plant in there home with them. The processed food smelled like graham crackers...YUM! Mom didn't let me eat any though. She said the caterpillars were growing and needed all they could get. Apparently, if they don't have enough food and they are together then once one goes into a chrysalis the others will eat it! YIKES! I don't want that to happen.

Look how small they were!

And now....my, how they have grown!! One is already in the j-shape too which means that VERY soon it will form a chrysalis and stay inside for about a week until it emerges as a butterfly. Mom's students are SUPER excited about this. :) They observed and drew the caterpillar in a j-shape in their journals today and they even got to eat leaves (lettuce) like a caterpillar for snack...of course, they had a bit of Ranch dressing on theirs. :)

See all the body parts...the Kindergarteners know all of these...impressive, huh! They are one smart bunch!

They even painted some caterpillars with all their correct parts. (For the most part anyway;)

I can't wait to share with you what will happen in about a week! Also, soon I will share some pictures of the tadpoles....a couple of them have hind AND front legs now!! :)

The oldest grandbiped did that in preschool and then one day they let them all fly away. It is a great way for them to learn.

Wow, that is awesome!! I will think of that next time I see a funny bug! The bugs are safe in my garden as I let them be. The lizards and pigeons however aren't. Did I tell you that I caught TWO piegons last night? Mom was late from work, so I thought I'd serve myself. She came back just as I was plucking away the feathers. She brought Baghera home - MY BOYFRIEND!!!! but didn't like the way the two of us romped around. She says Baghera is sick but I sure didn't see any of that! I could have played all night, but mom let me have a late night "play-date" with grumpy Kinza. Well, she tried Dennis Mugu first but uhm, that boy is slightly nasty... he tried to pin me up and you know, do what boys do. As if I'm in season, huh?? Anyways. My dinner got only half eaten before I got to chitchat with Kinza, and so since at the office, I caught another one. I didn't eat it though. Didn't even pluck the feathers. Mom doesn't understand how I caught a pigeon at late night, but lol, a girl's got to have a few secrets, right?

Anyways. Today, Allis the goat is all over mom's blog but tomorrow, it's my turn. Finally!!

Hope you have a great weekend!
I'm waiting for mom to get back from Baghera's - but she's promised me a long ride this afternoon. Hurray hurray hurray!

Warm greetings from Africa,
Sheba

Oh ew! I could hardly look at those pictures. I am afraid of those crawly things. I do enjoy butterflies though.

My wife did the caterpillar thing with her students one year, too -- I think they had a tomato hornworm, if I remember correctly. The kids thought it was the coolest thing!

Hi Amber! I found your blog through Esther's blog. I love Rhodesian Ridgeback's! As you can see I am also a large breed owner and am happy to meet another! I am adding you to my companion's list so I can keep in touch. Nala was almost our name. Good job with that perfect name! Stop by and meet our little (big) Africa sometime!

We love painted ladies! Arr mommee did this project in her classroom every year, too! Sadly her kids did not know all of the special names for things--she was lucky to get them to remember CHRYSALIS and not COCOON!

Wow, Nala, what a great post! So fascinating - I loved learning all about these caterpillars...although I do think they look a bit creepy with their hair bodies and legs...but I can't wait to see what they look like as butterflies!

And how cool that you get to go to the classroom to see them and the children!

What fun, and I learned a bit on today's visit. Now the big question: Do they taste like graham crackers? :)
